June 03 Been a big 2 months...The machines in Yishun Arcade is still pretty functional. The people there are still... ... quite friendly. Now, you are thinking that there must be some problem with what I said just now, for I will never say that they are friendly and nice if they REALLY are. 576 + 674 + 831 + 832 (???) + 738 (Totally fortituous). I'm not too pleased with this score. Add another 10 pts for that divergence cone that I missed and it would be MUCH better... 188 DRP points. HUMPH. THOSE ASSHOLES IN THE ARCADE POURED SOME "FENG YOU" OVER MY BACK AND KNOCKED MY HEAD OVER WHILE I WAS PLAYING!! Yes I know playing in this arcade means that I have to be physically abused by some AH BENGS, but I don't deserve this... I am just a quiet player in the arcade. I just hope that they see some sense... Well, they certainly are not scared of the inward head shaking directed at them right? I would like to do something, but given these peoples' nature, it's a life risking exercise. On to something more interesting? OR2SP: OR2: Not sure what I'm gonna do now, since its gonna be exam time AND breaking records seem to be harder and harder. January 31 Daytona USA 2...OR2SP machines seriously spoilt by those freaks who abuse the machines.
So I had to play Daytona USA 2.
Expert courses. Still trying to finish the game. But I actually got first for my last run!!!

Hey, lol it took me quite long to get a reply. Wonder if you are still watching?
Pretty sad that many times arcade fevers don't last that long. I wonder if there really is a future... and I am very sure that the operators can do more.
Anyway, have you taken a look at the internet article called "Arcade Culture" google it and you will find it. Pretty interesting.
PS: Wow I don't know that, sounds pretty cool.

I think Sega Amusements Europe hosted tournaments as part of their sales package for WCCF & DOC. The price for these games was around £150,000 and the few arcades who could afford it probably weren't prepared to spend any more on arranging tournaments. However although the tournaments were fairly successful, it didn't make the games overly popular and most arcades have now got rid of them. My local arcade removed DOC and WCCF about 4 months after getting them in! There may be an IR for Sega Rally 3 when it's released in the Far East. It will be strange if Sega Japan doesn't include one. Oh, I forgot to mention Sega Rally 3 is £2 per credit!!!!!! PS You have a banner advert for HSBC's UK Cash E-ISA savings account. I clicked on your link and opened one!

Because it works both ways: if the arcades are not making any money, SEGA would not be able to sell its machines anyway - not good for both parties. Of course, as from what you said, arcade operators are not exactly "operating" them so the game developer has to step in.
In Singapore it is simply not allowed for arcades to replace their game machines into gambling ones. Such gambling machines can only be found in country clubs - and even so the arcade and the "mini-casino" are not operated by the same party. This limits the mainstream's options to just the arcade (if they want to spend their money outdoors). As such, the arcade business in Singapore is still quite well-off, especially with the promotions and the competitions organised by the arcade operatiors themselves.
Minors (like me) also don't feel that arcades are THAT expensive anymore, especially when the promotions here are VERY agressive (as long as we limit our spending). And this is the reason why many of the "E-Zones" in Singapore are closing down rapidly - Old, outdated and unpopular machines, expensive pricing, no promotions at all. A typical arcade in the UK!!
The internet ranking is also a good way to keep a loyal (really hardcore players) customer base as well... if computer games can have one, why not arcade?

There have been some national competitions on Derby Owner's Club & WCCF. Probably because the machines cost so much to buy and Sega needed to help arcades recoup their investment! ;)
UK arcades have had an easy option to make money - switch to gambling machines. Most gambling is over 18 only but there are certain machines that be played by children (maximum prize £5). A lot of arcades replaced video games with these as they are cheap to buy and make profit very quickly. Most UK arcades are run by older men who do not understand video games but they do understand gambling.
Sega Rally 3 is actually based on the console game Sega Rally Revo. There are some differences, mainly the inclusion of the Desert track from Sega Rally 1. Bizzarely, there is no Internet Ranking on the European version. Also, the game was developed in the UK not Japan.

Same thoughts. At least there should be promotions and competitions.. these are definitely feasible in any arcade. There are tons of promotions in the arcades in Singapore, like an extra dollar of play value when you top up 10 dollars, point system and even scratch and win (I won an MP4 thanks to this!!) And because these promotions pay off really well their deadlines are usually extended (the scratch and win is supposed to end at the end of last year but it is still continuing now)
Sega Rally 3 looks fun, I like it quite a bit, well but that is because I am used to shifting gears with my right hand (since the games I play have their gears on the right). Majority would rather play MT3 or ID4 where the gearbox is at the left of the racing machines.

My friend playing Sega Rally 3
Arcades in the UK could learn from the Far East but they couldn't use exactly the same model. The West has a very different 'Pop' Culture from the Far East and not everything would work. Here are two Western arcade games you may not have seen: Ford Racing Fully Blown (basicallly the PC version of Ford Racing 3): http://i27.tinypic.com/160sffn.jpg NASCAR Racing (again, based on the NASCAR console games). This is nothing like Daytona USA. http://i26.tinypic.com/2jwm61.jpg

There is nothing to encourage people to play arcades games in the UK. Most operators think an arcade should run itself and don't understand the need for promotion or customer service. And when their business begins to fail, they would rather close down or replace video games with gambling machines than make changes.

I guess Sega and Namco games aren't that popular in the west where the arcade has been totally gobbled up by the console.

I've only seen one Manic Panic Ghosts machine in the UK, at Funland, Trocadero Centre, London. I had a couple of plays earlier this year and enjoyed it! Unfortunately, it does not have a reputation as a big money earner so other UK arcades won't buy the game. Also, Funland in London is the only place I have seen Tekken 6 and Initial D Version 4 in the UK. So this is the best place to come for new games - London is about 1hr 20 mins from my city by express train. Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 3 is popular amongst the Chinese/Hong Kong students in the UK. It's very expensive to fully-tune your car here so I think a lot of them bring their cards with them. Native players rarely tune cars and only have a quick play against a friend. I cannot speak for the whole arcade scene in the UK but I would say the dedicated players are from overseas. Perhaps the exception is Benami games (a large following) and fighting games (a smaller following). A lot of inexpensive games from the US like Need For Speed Underground, Fast & The Furious, Big Buck Hunter are very popular amongst the casual players and these are the titles arcades buy. Sega/Namco games are very expensive so fewer operators are prepared to buy their games unless they guarantee big profit!

Not sure if you are aware of this, but there are two new arcades titles forthcoming.
A lightgun title, RamboI'm sure you've heard about already
Also Sega Rally 3, this is being released in Europe first. Not sure if the far east will get the big cabinets.
